SpeakMax is a company that sells phonecards, similar to the ones common in so many other countries, cards used to make phone calls abroad – I am not connnected in any way to the company. Their rates, when the calls are made from land-based lines, are much cheaper than the ones charged by the telephone companies. A phone call to the States costs R$0,10 a minute. R$0,15 a minute if you are calling the UK.
They are more expensive than Skype, cheaper than any other alternative. You can buy SpeakMax cards from newsagents in Rio and São Paulo.
