pay your tax online… not!

pay your tax online… not!

1. The situation

As many of you are aware, the state of Pernambuco, administratively responsible for the idyllic Fernando de Noronha, charges a hefty environmental tax to all tourists arriving in the island.

On the island’s official website several sections announce that you can save time on arrival to the island by “prepaying your environmental tax online”.

But the truth is that when the foreign tourist piously believes that statement and fills online all his personal details, it finds out that to complete the payment of the tax he needs to print a form and take it to a Brazilian bank – in person!

2. Our comment

Fernando de Noronha is one of the most expensive and exclusive tourist destinations in Brazil. It receives a substantial amount of foreign tourists with a high purchasing power (the kind of tourist the Ministry of Tourism is fond of) and charges them an expensive environmental tax. To force foreigners to pay that tax at a Brazilian bank simply denies them the chance of paying the tax previous to their arrival in the island.

3. Our solution

Considering the vast amount of money collected through the environmental tax by the State of Pernambuco, there is no reason why an online credit card payment system shouldn’t be in place.

institutional videos: São Paulo

institutional videos: São Paulo

This is the second on a series of videos produced by the Brazilian tourism authorities. They all have a common theme: those states that will host 2014 World Cup games. During the coming weeks we will present all those videos here in the blog. They are shortish videos, with conventional but beautiful images of the states and its main destinations.

São Paulo:

We have devoted several blog posts to São Paulo, beginning with our destination: São Paulo. We have published our São Paulo’s top ten and a guide to São Paulo getaways. Below you will find a series of links to our main blog posts on the largest Brazilian city.

For those who read Spanish, we have published our very own Guía de São Paulo.

Portuguese mosaic, it all began in Manaus

Portuguese mosaic, it all began in Manaus

Copacabana

You would need to be quite absent-minded to walk Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro and not notice the beautiful waves along the sidewalk formed by Portuguese mosaic (photograph above). In spite of its fame, Rio wasn’t the first Brazilian city where the mosaic was used. In 1900 Manaus imported from Lisbon what was at the time a very popular embellishment for open spaces. The small black and white stones served as a model for Copacabana years later.

Manaus / Manaos

To find the mosaic in Manaus (photograph above) you need not go further than Praça de São Sebastião, the square right in front of Teatro Amazonas. The patterns of waves depicts the scene seen at the Meeting of the Waters (a natural phenomenon we talked about in the Meeting of the Waters and the Janauary Ecological Park, near Manaus).

If you are lucky to see the mosaic on location, wander around the square staring at the mosaic and let yourselves be engulfed by the fantastic optical illusion of waves coming and going.

Desconto SP – discount vouchers for tourist attractions in São Paulo

Desconto SP – discount vouchers for tourist attractions in São Paulo

desconto SP

Desconto SP is a website set up by the São Paulo Convention & Visitors Bureau. Tourists can select from the multiple options offered at the site the vouchers that interest them and print them at home. There are discounts for bar and restaurants, shops, accommodation, car rental, museums, ecotourism agencies and them parks. Worth a look.

desconto SP 2

A good initiative that unfortunately it is available in Portuguese only. Shocking for a city the size of São Paulo and its international appeal.

a handy tourist map of São Paulo

a handy tourist map of São Paulo

São Paulo Destino / Destination is a map produced by the local authorities of São Paulo.

The problem of a substantial number of maps of São Paulo is that they try to incorporate in a single map all the information about the immense city. The result is often unsatisfactory. The map I am recommending today opted for separate treatment for different sections of the city.

As well as a printed version of the map you should be able to get at the tourist office, you can download a PDF version from the following link (download will start right away). Alternatively you can visit the page Área para download and click on the image of the map (first on the third row).
