A recent article from Lonely Planet with the title Brazil’s top 10 carnivals contains two statements that need to be corrected.
- First and most obvious, the Rio carnival does not take place during Easter (“Held over five days of revelry during Easter“). I don’t feel many travelers will fall for this one.
- Second, from late July until mid-August you will not find any bumba-meu-boi in São Luís do Maranhão (“Held from late July until mid-August“). Got the dates all wrong. At bumba-meu-boi you will find that specific bit of information as well as the rest you need to know about one of the true outstanding Brazilian festivals.
Many travelers swear by the information produced by Lonely Planet. The publisher, like everybody else, including ourselves, makes the occasional mistake. I felt I had to correct them to avoid disappointment.
