While we had lunch at a humble and very popular fish restaurant in Manaus (the off-the-beaten track peixaria do Jokka Loureiro), we enjoyed the view of the majestic river Negro on its very last kilometres of life – shortly after Manaus it becomes the mighty Amazon. Boats going up and down the river were our lunch companions while we stared at a mass of water our brain had problems processing as just a river.

We have published quite a few blog posts here at the Brazil Travel Blog on the Amazon, including an index of blog posts on the Amazon and an entry for Manaus.

At the Fortaleza Beach Park you will come across the more than aptly named Insano. It is the highest water slide in the world, its height being the equivalent of a 14-storey building. Because of its slope, the descent is extremely quickly and carried out at a speed of 105 km/h.

For adrenaline junkies.

We have travel info on Fortaleza at our blog post destination: Fortaleza.
Over the last few years, the popularity of cruise ships has increased considerably. It is the choice for the holidays of many Brazilians and a substantial number of foreigners too.

The cruise ship on the photo was shot in Búzios, a very popular port of call for all routes navegating that part of the Brazilian coastline. We have travel info on Búzios at our blog post destination: Búzios.
Although traces of European colonization in the southern region of Brazil are well-known by tourists, there is a town in the Mantiqueira Mountains, in the state of São Paulo, that is hardly ever visited by foreign tourists: Campos do Jordão. A two-hour drive from the city of São Paulo, Campos do Jordão is a place where the visitor will find Central European architecture, mountains, cold temperatures, a fireplace at their pousada, artesanal beer and German sausages… a tad fake, if you ask me.

Campos do Jordão features as one of our recommended São Paulo getaways.

Needless to say, it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise. Our Pantanal handbook contains all the info you need about this wonderful destination. Today we are presenting a selection of shots taken over a short period of time in Northern Pantanal.

A few times here at the blog we have reflected on the importance surf has for the life of many youngsters along the gigantic Brazilian coastline. For them, surf is such a central part of their lifes as it can be for an Australian or a Hawaiian. Dunes along the coast provide these youngsters with another source of endless excitement: sandboarding.

Our first weekly shot is from the top of the mythical sunset dune in Jericoacara, Ceará. Our second shot is from the equally popular Joaquina dunes on the island of Florianópolis.

If you want more information on “Jeri”, have a look at our blog post destination: Jericoacoara. If you want more information on Florianópolis, head to destination: Florianópolis.

There can be nothing more Brazilian than an informal soccer game at the beach – played by the locals. You will witness those friendly disputes all along the Brazilian coastline, from the widest strips of land to beaches where the advancing tide threatens to turn soccer into waterpolo. The photos illustrating this entry are from Arraial d’Ajuda and Caraíva, both in the south coast of the state of Bahia.

Fernando de Noronha conjures up images of idylic beaches and awesome underwater landscapes. Few people associate the Brazilian paradise to other interesting aspects of tourism in the country, such as history. And while you wander around the Vila dos Remédios you will hopefully come across the beautifully restored church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (built on 1772).

It’s so interesting to see how the inhabitants of the Amazon region manage to add an even greener (and for that matter, yellow, too) touch to their cities and villages while the soccer world cup takes place miles away. The photos were taken in the formidable Amazon destination of Alter do Chão during the celebration of the 2010 World Cup.
