If you find this text at a location other than the Brazil Travel Blog it is an unauthorized use of the blog material.

Daylight savings time begins at midnight on Saturday 15 for the regions South, South East and Centre-West (they include the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Distrito Federal). Bahia, in the Northeast, will also implement daylight savings time. We’ll have to put the clocks forward (by) an hour. Summer time savings end on 26 February 2012.

At what time is it in Brazil? I explained how to find out, real time, what time is it on each and every Brazilian state. Bear in mind that Brazil has several time zones and also be aware that the change does not apply to the Northeast region – with the exception of Bahia.

A couple of months in anticipation of the Christmas season, work to build up the famous Christmas tree in Rio de Janeiro has begun (No Rio, árvore de Natal já começa a ser montada). The tree is traditionally erected on the middle of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. It will be inaugurated on 26 November are if you visit Rio during the Christmas season I wouldn’t miss it!

This change applies to the South, Southeast and Centre-West regions of the country (the states affected by the change are: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as the Distrito Federal). Clocks will have to be put back one hour.

The easiest way to find out what time it is on any Brazilian state at a given time is to use the tool I explained at What time is it in Brazil?

The headline reads: “Minister [of Tourism] denies Brazil is a sex tourism destination”. Denial is the authorities’ major contribution to solving a sordid reality: according to UNICEF, there are 250,000 children forced into prostitution across Brazil. In the words of Sarah de Carvalho of Happy Child International:

“the crisis for these children turning to prostitution has increased significantly in the north-east of Brazil over the last few years, fuelled by increasing numbers of foreign tourists who travel to Brazil for sex holidays.”

These and other informations can be seen on a recent BBC documentary with the title Brazil’s Child Prostitutes. According to Chris Rogers, the BBC jornalist responsible for the program, Brazil is overtaking Thailand as the preferred sex tourism destination worldwide.

The World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 loom ahead. Drastic and definitive action, of the kind I haven’t seen in Brazil in the ten years I’ve been living here, is needed.

Discount websites have arrived in Brazil. An ever-increasing number of sites offer substantial discounts on food and services being advertised through their web pages. Every day I receive on my inbox a daily offer being sent by some of those websites. I’ve been using <a href="http://www.peixeurbano.com.br/"target=" blank" rel="nofollow>Peixe Urbano and <a href="http://www.clubeurbano.com.br/"target=" blank" rel="nofollow>Clube Urbano but there are plenty more (all of them suspiciously similar in layout to the others):

<a href="http://www.agrupe.com.br/"target=" blank" rel="nofollow>AGrupe

<a href="http://www.clickclub.com.br/"target=" blank" rel="nofollow>Click Club

<a href="http://www.valejunto.com.br/"target=" blank">ValeJunto brings discounts from several websites together in one page.

Most sites cover all the big Brazilian cities. You need to select which city you are interested in. By giving your email address, you will get a daily offer on your mailbox.

On its annual meeting (taking place in Brasilia) Unesco has just approved a new Brazilian addition to the list of world heritage sites: it is the Praça de São Francisco (São Francisco square), in the city of São Cristovão, state of Sergipe. The square was built between the end of the XVI century and the beginning of the XVII century. Brazil’s has now 18 sites inscribed in the Unesco list (see the list of Brazilian sites at our blog post World Heritage Sites).

According to Unesco’s site:

São Francisco Square, in the town of São Cristovão, is a quadrilateral open space surrounded by substantial early buildings such as São Francisco Church and convent, the Church and Santa Casa da Misericórdia, the Provincial Palace and the associated houses of different historical periods surrounding the Square. This monumental ensemble, together with the surrounding 18th- and 19th- century houses, creates an urban landscape which reflects the history of the town since its origin. The Franciscan complex is an example of the typical architecture of the religious order developed in north-eastern Brazil.

Sergipe is a state in the northeast region of Brazil, trapped between Bahia and Alagoas. Tourism in Sergipe is at its infancy.

Torrential rain over the state of Paraná has meant a sharp increase in the volume of water carried by the Iguazu river. This has forced the Argentinian authorities to close the walkway leading to the Devil’s Throat.

If you have a look at the link we explained at Enough water at the Iguazu falls? you will see that the volume of water reached unbelievable 11,400 m3 per second when the average is 1,200 m3 per second. More than ten times the average volume of water! A Brazilian website published yesterday a <a href="http://noticias.uol.com.br/album/100426_album.jhtm?abrefoto=35"target=" blank">photograph showing the awesome volume of water going down the falls on the Brazilian side.

Forecasters are expecting rain will ease over the coming few days.

If you find this text at a location other than the Brazil Travel Blog it is an unauthorized use of the blog material.

Brazilian summer time comes to an end at midnight on Saturday 20.
