According to the official calendar, the 2011 carnival will take place between 5 and 8 March. The Rio de Janeiro escolas de samba will parade at the sambadrome on Sunday 6 and Monday 7. The São Paulo parades will take place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5.

Although the dates seem miles away, the farsighted travellers will make accommodation arrangements for the period long in advance – it is the only way of finding good value accommodation for places like Rio or Salvador.

Sales of tickets for the samba schools parade in São Paulo is already under way. You will find details of the prices at the following page: Ingresso Fácil (in Portuguese only). The most affordable option are the Arquibancada tickets (stands), at the bottom of the list.

Other ticket outlets in São Paulo include the Pacaembú and Morumbi stadiums and the Ginásio do Ibirapuera.

Ingresso Fácil’s website includes a map of the sambadrome where you can see the location of the different sectors. We recommend you sectors C, D, G or H, from which you have an excellent view of the parade.

There will be two major parades:

- on Friday 12 February.
- on Saturday 13 February.

The carnival in Salvador de Bahia 2010 will take place from 11 to 16 February. A handful of websites with information on the carnival:

• Portal oficial del Carnaval 2009. The carnival’s official website. Detail information of the carnival events hasn’t been made public yet, it will be announced during the first fortnight in January.
• Folia Bahia. Complete information including a map showing where the carnival circuits are.
• EFolia.net. Another site with a good deal of practical info.

The Association of Rio de Janeiro’s Escolas de Samba (LIESA) has announced the prices for the carnival parades at the Sambadrome: LIESA anuncia cronograma de venda de ingressos para o Carnaval 2010. At the same website you can see a map of the venue at Sambadrome map to understand better where each sector is located.

The escolas de samba enter the Sambodrome from the left on the map, right next to Setor 1. Setor 1 tickets are the cheapest of all because from that location you don’t actually get to see the parade but rather the gathering of the different groups. The parade ends on the right hand side of the map, in the part known as Praça da Apoteose (although the name doesn’t feature on the map). Tickets here are more affordable as the escolas arrive here quite tired after one hour parading through the Sambadrome.

In 2009 we attended the parade of the samba schools at the São Paulo sambadrome. During that night my camera never ceased clicking, and the result of that party is now online: 9 photo albums devoted to the carnival collection.

Although the dates seem miles away, the farsighted travellers have already made accommodation arrangements for the period – it is the only way of finding good value accommodation for places like Rio or Salvador.

The two days of parades of the samba schools in Rio will be 22 Sunday and 23 Monday. The winning escolas de samba will parade again on 28 February.

Sambadrome ticket prices

The umbrella Association for all the Escolas de Samba from Rio, LIESA, has just published on its website the prices of tickets for carnival parades at the Sambadrome in 2008 : Ingressos Sambódromo 2008. For most tourists the interesting part are the Arquibancadas, the stands. On the same page there is a map of the Sambadrome (click on the link on the top right hand-side corner of the page).

The escolas de samba enter the sambadrome through the bottom side of the map (the bit labeled Área de Armação, and known as Concentração). Tickets for Setor 1 are cheap because you don’t get to see the schools parading – only their preparations.

The parade finishes on the top side of the map, on the part known as Praça da Apoteose (not labeled as such on the map). Tickets for this part of the sambadrome are also cheaper as you only get to see the end of the parade, when the escolas are already tired after a performance of more than one hour.
