They all have a common theme: those states that will host 2014 World Cup games. During the coming weeks we will present all those videos here in the blog. They are shortish videos, with conventional but beautiful images of the states and its main destinations.

Bahia:

It all began here. In the Cidade Alta of Porto Seguro you will find the marco do Descobrimento, a stone brought from Portugal at the beginning of the XVI century. Its mission was to affirm Portuguese sovereignty over the place where the stone was placed. Porto Seguro had been, after all, the entry point for the Portuguese discoverers of Brazil. One side of the stone has the cross of the Avis Order carved; on the other side you will find the coat of arms of Portugal.

On my last visit to Porto Seguro, the monument to the Portuguese discoverers had just been inaugurated. When I took the pictures the monument was not even a week old, it was all nice and clean. There are two groups of sculptures. The first one recreates the first mass held on Brazilian land by the Portuguese conquerors. The second one shows the native Indians, surrounded by wild animals, contemplating the Portuguese. The monuments is in Coroa Vermelha, a few miles north of Porto Seguro.

Porto Seguro es the mecca for mass tourism in Brazil. Of all the domestic destinations that can be reached by plane, none is cheaper than Porto Seguro. As a result, hordes of Brazilians invade the city nearly all year round.

WE LIKE THE MOST: the historic part of the city, the beaches to the north

WE LIKE THE LEAST: mass tourism, alcohol culture, the daily environmental crime committed at the Recife de Fora

HOW TO GET THERE: Porto Seguro has its own airport. By road, only coming from Salvador – the trip is a real killer.

CAREFUL WITH: the boat trip to the Recife de Fora, if the sea is rough it will be a trip you will never forget.

FAVOURITE PLACES: the historic part of the city, if you can detach yourselves from the legion of tourists and souvenir sellers

PIECE OF ADVICE:

most of the hotels in Porto Seguro are on the beaches north of the city; to go back and forth you will need to use transportation

do not miss nearby Arraial d’Ajuda. No need to buy a package to go there, public transportation is cheap and efficient. If you have a bit more time, visit Trancoso too.

another interesting trip will take you along the coast north of Porto Seguro, reaching Santo André
